Applying for Faculty Affiliation

PiN faculty affiliates must hold a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment (assistant, associate, or full professor) at a Harvard-affiliated institution and are expected to secure R01-level independent support as the PI or Co-PI with sufficient funds to cover student costs in Year 3 and above. When reviewing applications for affiliation, PiN considers whether faculty are able to provide a robust, stable training environment for 5+ years in basic/preclinical neuroscience research for our students.

Interested faculty should review the DMS student rate sheet and PiN guidelines for advisors before completing their application and note:

  • PiN requires faculty to complete mentorship training within one year of accepting a PiN student for their thesis research (i.e., a CIMER workshop or the equivalent, such as mentor training for the HHMI Gilliam and Hanna Gray fellowships). You can view upcoming Harvard-sponsored CIMER training opportunities here.
  • The Division of Medical Sciences expects your home department to backstop funding for any PiN student who joins your lab in the unlikely event that lab funding should run out before they finish their PhD. You will be asked to provide contact information for the department chair or equivalent responsible party for funding purposes when a student joins your lab.

PiN reviews applications on a rolling basis and invites all program faculty to participate in a series of lightning talks and poster sessions for our incoming students every year in the fall, as well as a recruitment reception for prospective students during our admissions interview weekend on the third Friday in January, each year.
