Financial Support
All PiN students, regardless of citizenship status, automatically receive full tuition support, a monthly stipend, health coverage, and a relocation allowance and may be eligible for additional benefits provisioned by the HMS Office for Graduate Education, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the Harvard Graduate Students Union.
Stipend & Benefits
PiN students receive full tuition and stipend support as outlined in their financial aid offer while they are enrolled and making satisfactory progress toward their degree.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the total stipend compensation of $51,500 over 12 months includes:
- $50,460/year stipend ($4,205/month average)
- $1,040 subsidy to cover dental insurance, if elected, and transportation costs
- Dental subsidy paid on September 1, transportation subsidy paid in two installments at the start of each semester
All PiN students are eligible to enroll in the Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP). The HMS Office for Graduate Education covers the annual student health fee. Click the link for a summary of the benefits offered with the plan.
All PiN students automatically receive a one-time $1,000 relocation allowance upon matriculation, which is fully discretionary.
Harvard Griffin GSAS Hardship Fund
At the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, we understand that an emergency can cause significant stress and uncertainty, impacting your academic success and personal well-being. Students who experience financial hardship as the result of an emergency are encouraged to connect with the Office of Financial Aid. HGSU-UAW Emergency Grant Fund
The contract between Harvard University and the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU-UAW) establishes a fund of $50,000 to provide student workers with funds to meet temporary hardship due to a significant emergency event. https://harvardgradunion.org/emergency-grant-fund/
OGE PhD Childcare Scholarship
PiN students may apply for additional support from the HMS Office for Graduate Education Childcare Scholarship. These funds are paid out twice a year for a maximum of five years.
Parental Accommodations and Financial Support
Students enrolled in PhD programs at Harvard Griffin GSAS who are expecting a child either by adoption or childbirth are eligible for the PAFS program.

The Harvard Graduate Students Union manages a number of benefit funds. If a PiN student is appointed to a union position, they may speak to a union representative about other benefits available under the contract between HGSU-UAW and the University.
Fellowships
Many PiN students successfully apply for external fellowships, including the NSF GRFP, NIH F30/F31, and HHMI Gilliam fellowships. Students can search the GSAS Carat Database for additional fellowship opportunities. The HMS Office for Graduate Education provides advising and other support, in partnership with the GSAS Fellowships & Writing Center, for students interested in applying for external fellowships. PiN offers a series of workshops and individualized peer mentorship every year for students applying for the NSF GRFP. PiN students who receive external fellowships may be eligible for a monthly stipend bonus.
Helpful Tips for PiN Students
Students are encouraged to enroll in direct deposit for your graduate stipend payments, which will ensure speedy and secure transfer of funds directly to your bank account.
Visit hr.harvard.edu, click on the PeopleSoft link at the top right, and login using your HarvardKey.
Once in PeopleSoft, within the Self-Service menu, click on My Pay and then Deposit.
Any grant or stipend amount awarded in excess of tuition, required fees, books, and supplies is subject to federal income tax, as is any funding contingent upon providing service to the University (for example, teaching fellowships or research assistantships). Depending on citizenship and physical location, income taxes may or may not be withheld from stipend payments. More details are available from Harvard University Student Financial Services. Students are urged to review this information and ensure that they incorporate any resulting tax obligation into their financial planning.
